Biography

James Waide is a composer, researcher, and teacher based in Manchester. As a PhD student at the Royal Northern College of Music, he is researching the relationship between composition, Lacanian Psychoanalysis and contemporary continental philosophy. As a composer, he has worked with a variety of professional ensembles and soloists, and he frequently organises concerts featuring Hive sinfonia, the ensemble he co-founded. His research interrogates the socio-linguistic functions of music, in service of a musical praxis which can challenge power and support emancipation. His recent work includes a performance as part of Wiebke Thormählen’s Hearing Histories project, a workshop with the Riot Ensemble, and an ongoing collaboration with harpist Anne-Marie O’Farrell.
